Overview
Course Description:
Attainment of optimal oral health and wellness is a challenging and dynamic process that occurs along the aging continuum. This course will present a new model for health prevention for older adults. Discussion will emphasize safety considerations when managing older adults in the dental setting. Participants will learn preventive strategies to minimize risks that negatively impact oral and systemic health, including lifetime negative health habits, environmental hazards, medication management and elder abuse. Participants will learn how to individualize preventive strategies to improve desired health outcomes for their elderly patients, including preventing infections, promoting positive health behaviors, preventing medical emergencies. The importance of informed consent and advocacy will be discussed.Learning Objectives:
• Discuss the relationships between oral and systemic health
• Identify lifelong habits and risk behaviors that negatively impact oral and systemic health
• Identify risk factors for falls, complications with medication use, and medical emergencies
• Identify components of a preventive practice plan to reduce health risks and ensure patient safety
•Discuss informed consent and patient advocacy
About the Speaker: Dr. Spolarich is an internationally recognized author and speaker on pharmacology and the care of medically complex patients. She has presented over 1,000 invited lectures and has over 125 professional publications. She is Professor, Course Director of Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology, and Director of Research at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, A.T. Still University (ATSU), where she teaches part-time in the Special Care Clinic. Ann was awarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene from the Special Care Dentistry Association in 2016.
