The Role of Myofunctional Therapy in Pre- and Post-op Frenotomy Care
1.00
Overview:
This
1-hour continuing education course is designed to provide dental professionals
with a comprehensive understanding of the critical role myofunctional therapy
plays in the care of patients undergoing frenotomies. The presentation will
explore the collaborative approach between dental hygienists and
speech/myofunctional therapists to optimize patient outcomes before and after
frenotomy procedures. Participants
will learn to identify the signs and symptoms of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) and
its functional implications on oral health, speech, and overall wellness. The
course will emphasize the importance of pre- and post-operative myofunctional
therapy in preparing the wound site, promoting optimal healing, and enhancing
functional outcomes. By
the end of the session, attendees will gain practical insights into integrating
these principles into their practice, improving their ability to advocate for
and support patients with ankyloglossia and other myofunctional disorders in
order to better make appropriate referrals. Learning
Objectives:
Identify the
signs and symptoms of ankyloglossia and its impact on oral and systemic
function.
Understand the
role of pre-operative myofunctional therapy in wound site preparation and
functional readiness.
Explore
post-operative myofunctional therapy strategies for optimizing healing and
improving function following frenotomy.
Recognize the
collaborative benefits of working with speech/myofunctional therapists in
managing patients with ankyloglossia.

Treating Malocclusion in Airway, Sleep-Related Breathing and Myofunctional Disorders
1.00
Overview:
oard-Certified Pediatric
Dentist and Owner of Bridger Children’s Dentistry in Bozeman, MT, Dr. Nasim
Aleagha’s presentation will complement the previous speakers’ presentations by
delving into the importance of early treatment options for malocclusion due to
ankloglossia, airway and sleep-disordered breathing. Participants will gain concrete tools to help
screen pediatric patients for airway-related problems and sleep disordered
breathing. Attendees will learn the importance of early screening and
intervention as keys to reducing risk for sleep apnea. Through case studies,
participants will gain understanding that malocclusion resulting from mouth
breathing and improper tongue function is related to sleep disordered breathing
and will perpetuate and worsen if left untreated. As a sustaining doctor of the Academy of
Airway and Gnathologic Orthopedics, Dr. Aleagha strives to solve orthodontic,
bite and airway issues without extraction of permanent teeth or jaw surgery.
Participants will acquire knowledge in the appliances and benefits of
gnathologic orthopedics, beyond improved aesthetics, including larger arches,
more tongue space, improved airway and sleep-disordered breathing.
