Overview: As dental professionals, we know the mouth is connected to the rest of the body and oral health is an important contributor to overall health. Although the risk factors for dental caries and periodontal diseases are well known, we have not been able to eradicate these diseases. The prevalence of oral diseases continues to be high and is reaching epidemic proportions. Research demonstrates the progression of dental caries and periodontal disease occurs because of the interaction between biofilm and oral structures over time. Patient education, motivation, and the adaptation of power technology concerning adequate biofilm removal, is needed to improve the oral health of our patients. This course includes discussion on how technology can be incorporated into the dental/dental hygiene process of care. Appropriate product selection based on the patient’s risk factors will be reviewed.
Objectives - Identify the risks associated with biofilm and oral structures
- Recognize the benefits to using power devices for daily biofilm management
- Examine clinical evidence to support your recommendations
- Recommend oral hygiene products based on the patients’ risk factors
- Explore patient education materials to help patients achieve optimal oral health
