Wisconsin Overview: What is a Dental Therapist and Why Are They Good For Both Dentists and Patients?
1.50
Overview:
There are 5,863 Dental Health Professional Shortage areas in
the United States leaving at least 57,937,800 without access to quality,
affordable and accessible dental care. HRSA estimates that the US would need at
least 10,635 dentists to address this lack of access. Dental therapists are
relatively new, in the US, members of the oral health care team who can provide
safe, high quality and cost effective dental care to underserved patients and
help address this lack of access to dental care. This presentation will review the sad state
of affairs about access to quality oral health care in the USA and the
detrimental effects of lack of access to dental care. We will also review the
evidence about safety, quality, outcomes and cost effectiveness of dental therapists.
Finally, we will provide rebuttal information about the
lies/myths/misinformation used by opponents of dental therapists.
This
educational program will have four objectives:
1. Review the data demonstrating that the
dental healthcare system is broken with respect to oral health disparities.
2.
Define the scope of practice of the dental therapist from a historical
perspective with a focus on Alaska and Minnesota
3. Describe
the evidence supporting the quality, safety, and efficacy of dental therapy and
how to revert misinformation about the true facts.
4. Gain
a shared understanding through a question and answer session to help the
audience become better advocates of dental therapy

Management of acute odontogenic pain is accomplished through
a clinical approach that successfully incorporates intraoperative local
anesthesia and a postoperative regimen of non-opioid and opioid analgesics.
However, improper and inappropriate use of both local anesthetic agents and
analgesics have the potential to produce adverse outcomes for our patients.
Thus, it is critical for clinicians to accurately evaluate the need for pain
control, identify associated risks, and assess the efficacy of the agents to be
administered.
This program will provide participants with a comprehensive
understanding of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents
and analgesics. Special emphasis will be given to effective perioperative pain
management and best practices for prescribing analgesics for postoperative pain
control.
• Discuss local anesthetic agents with respect to their
mechanisms of action, adverse effects, contraindications and clinical
considerations. • Differentiate between
the two major classes of local anesthetic agents with respect to their
distribution, metabolism, adverse effects, drug interactions and
contraindications. • Specify the various
local anesthetic agent combinations most commonly used in dentistry and the
rationale for their use in specific clinical situations. • Explain the rationale for the use of
vasoconstrictors and potential adverse effects. • Describe the pharmacology and mechanism of action of analgesics used
in the management of acute dental pain, including situations which may preclude
their use. • Examine the intended role
of opioid and non-opioid analgesics in the treatment of acute dental pain, as
well as situations which may preclude their use. • Discover best practices for prescribing
analgesics, as well as proper storage and disposal of unused dosages. • Identify techniques useful in recognizing
and identifying potential opioid addiction and current protocols for its
treatment.

The purpose of this presentation is to bring practical
research dissemination skills to the oral health community. Being able to
recognize and analyze credible scientific based research is an important part
of a health care provider’s professional responsibility. At times patients
challenge oral health professionals on the safety and credibility of our
practice methods based on information they had read online, saw on television,
or heard from others. Knowing the latest in health and oral health research helps
the oral health clinicians to have a high level of credibility with co-workers,
patients, and allied health professionals. Oral health professionals have
access to patient’s medical history, culture and lifestyle practices, and oral
health. By being well read in various aspects of oral and systemic health we
can put all of these pieces together to determine the steps which need to take
place for a patient to receive optimal health outcomes, both oral and systemic.
COSH is one entity who is striving to close the gap between oral and systemic
health and strengthen relationships between oral and systemic health care
providers. Research conducted by entities such as COSH will help improve how
oral health care is managed in the future. The skills and experiences of oral
health providers can help researchers better understand the types of studies
that can have the greatest impact on population health.

dental personnel, as well as the available and recommended methods of
protection against the influence of bio-aerosol and plume.
